Story
Elwood Curtis’ college dreams are shattered on a two-lane Florida highway. He suffers the brunt of an innocent misstep and is sentenced to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory deep in the Jim Crow South. He encounters another parishioner, the all-seeing Turner. The two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner shares survival tips, Elwood clings to his optimistic worldview. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning civil rights movement, Elwood and Turner appear worlds apart from the polished oratory of the Rev. Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s cruelty, Elwood struggles to hold on to his humanity, awakening a new perspective in Turner.
