It follows Caligula as he kills his devious adoptive grandfather and takes control of a decadent Roman Empire that is descending into ruin, devastation, and madness. The film is a complete re-imagining of Caligula (1979), based on 96 hours of never-before-seen footage restored many years after its release. Rather than expanding existing scenes with new footage, the entire film was re-edited from scratch, resulting in a version that does not contain a single frame from the theatrical version.
Visual effects were used to enhance scenes and replace cheap sets and backgrounds, and AI technology was used to restore previously unusable dialogue that was plagued by background noise. In contrast to the free ballet score, new music was also composed. This version, originally planned for a limited theatrical release in late 2020, premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
I appreciated the end result of a long struggle to offer a quasi-original film. I liked the new scenes, which offer a breath of fresh air to a film that represents, even for bitter critics, a legend or a kind of classic. I was interested in the impressions of a viewer who had only discovered this version.
Impressive? No doubt! Perfect?
It may provoke, but that is its essential virtue. In short, for many reasons you absolutely must see it.
